Police received a report of a stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee in Waterbury shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Troopers were told that the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the day near the Southington rest area on I-84. Officers from the Waterbury Police Department attempted to stop the Jeep, but the driver was able to speed away and evade them.

Shortly after 2:15 p.m., troopers spotted the jeep in the left lane of I-84 near exit 39A, beginning to pursue it until the driver exited the interstate on exit 42, continuing to evade police following him. Police said the driver - later identified as Glastonbury resident Scott Kaminski - struck several vehicles in West Hartford and Hartford during the pursuit.

According to police, Kaminski was later spotted driving east on I-84 near exit 48. Troopers again attempted to stop him, but the chase continued onto I-91 and Route 140.

Kaminski eventually struck a dump truck and the Jeep tipped onto its side, coming to a rest at the intersection of Route 140 and Shoham Road. When troopers approached the vehicle, they found Kaminski unconscious and he was transported by paramedics to Hartford Hospital for evaluation.

Kaminski - who had two active PRAWN warrants and two active warrants from the Manchester Police Department - was arrested following his release from the hospital. He was charged with:

  • Larceny;
  • Interfering with an officer and resisting arrest;
  • Reckless driving;
  • Illegal operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license;
  • Engaging police in a pursuit;
  • Illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Failure to keep narcotics in the original container;
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia;
  • Possession of a controlled substance.

Kaminski, 32, is being held in lieu of $250,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
